How to Prepare Your Belongings Before Starting a Home Renovation

Home Painting

Home renovations are not always an easy task and usually, the result is the most glorified part of the process. Whether you are updating your tiles in your bathroom, adding a third bedroom, or doing an entire renovation throughout your home it can be a stressful experience. There are many factors that you need to consider during the planning phase including where to store contracts and receipts as well as how to deal with any scheduling conflicts that may arise. However, in terms of your belongings, we at XYZ Storage are here to help you prepare yourself and your belongings to undergo a home renovation. We thought it would be a helpful to share a three-part process for how to prepare your belongings before starting a home renovation.

Part 1: Take Inventory of Your Belongings

Go through all the rooms that you plan on renovating and take out all of the furniture. It would be best to get all of your belongings and furniture out of the way so that the home renovation process goes a lot smoother. Keep track of where you put each of your belongings for the time being, so you have an idea of where it is being stored within your home. If you decide to store it in a rental unit, it will be helpful to know what you decided to place in there as well.

Part 2: Figure Out Where to Store Your Belongings

There may be plenty of questions that come to mind when preparing you and your home to do any renovations and one of them likely is “what do I do with my belongings?”. If you are doing a major home renovation and your belongings are likely not to fit in the garage, consider renting a self-storage unit or a mobile storage container. Here is a breakdown of the benefits of both to figure out which option is best suited for you:

Self-storage: A self-storage unit can be a longer-term, but still a temporary solution to storing all of the belongings that you do not have space for due to any construction and renovations. This way all of your belongings will be kept in a safe, clean, and climate-controlled facility. You get a more customized solution in terms of size, price, and location depending on how much stuff you need to store. Home renovations can be stressful and messy, but self-storage can help ease your worries and provide storage space for your belongings.

Mobile Storage: If you are planning on doing a renovation that will only last a few days or a few weeks, consider using a mobile storage container to store your belongings for the time being. Mobile storage is a wonderful option as the container can be stored in your backyard or driveway while you work on the renovations inside your home. It is a flexible and convenient solution that provides you access to your belongings. If you do not have a whole lot of stuff but need that extra space mobile storage may be the right option for you.

Part 3: Packing Your Belongings for Storage

Now it is time to prepare your belongings for storage and if you have decided to go the self-storage route when prepping your belongings there are a few things that you need to consider. For example, keeping in mind some of the restrictions when it comes to storage, making a list of everything you plan on placing in storage, and labeling all of your boxes.
