Luckily, at XYZ Storage, we’re not just experts when it comes to storage solutions, we also know a thing or two about moving into a new house.

So, to guarantee that your moving and unpacking process goes as smoothly as possible, stick around and take note of the following tips we’ve put together just for you!

What is the first thing you should move into a new house?

Some of the first things you’ll need to move into your new house are the items you and your family consider “essential.” Here is a list of belongings you should think about prioritizing:

Pack an essential box

The first thing you’ll want to move into your new house is a box of essentials. Items like your toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toilet paper, and other toiletries are a must. You should also pack any important medications you may need. Additionally, any important documents like your passport, birth certificates, legal documents, and other items of the sort should also be included. Don’t forget to bring a phone charger, keys to your new home, car, and wallet with you as well!

If you have pets, make sure to include their bed, food, and some toys to keep them occupied during their first night!

Furniture and larger home items

Next, you’ll want to move in any furniture and large items you may have. Most likely, your moving company will begin with your beds, to ensure you have a comfortable place to sleep the first couple of nights you are in your new space.

Of course, your mattresses, bed frames, pillows, and linens will also be included in this. Afterward, you can consider bringing in any living room furniture you may need throughout the day, such as your couch and chairs. Kitchen tables and chairs are also essential on the first day, so your loved ones can enjoy a warm meal after your hours of hard work.

Kitchen essentials

We also recommend you bring in kitchen essentials early on as well. If your new place doesn’t come equipped with any appliances, you’ll need to move in your refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and any other important appliances. Don’t forget the basics like cutlery and some pantry essentials in case you get hungry throughout the evening.

Ensure safety features are working

Before you go to sleep in your new home, homeowners will also want to prioritize the safety features of their new home. Make sure that the front door is secure, that your security alarm system is activated and working, andthat the fire alarm, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors are on as well.

Where to start when moving into a new home?

To start your moving, here is what you should consider doing first:

Notify your friends and family

Start with the people closest to  you. Let them know that you plan on moving, the date of your move, and where your new house is located!

Notify your employers and other businesses

You’ll then want to inform your employer and other essential businesses like the post office and utility companies about your address changes. This can help you miss any payments and ensure that all your future mail is forwarded to your new home.

Don’t forget to speak with your insurance company and transfer your car and home insurance to your new house address! This will prevent any gaps in coverage and ensure you still have safeguards in place.

Start packing non-essentials

In terms of packing, we suggest beginning with your non-essential items. This includes out-of season-clothing, old albums and keepsakes, and any other belongings you have in your home that you don’t need on a daily. With this stuff boxed up and out of the way, you can focus on your important items closer to your moving day.

Can I start my moving process the week before?

Whether or not you can pack up your entire home a week before your scheduled moving date really depends on how much stuff you have. If you live in a one-bedroom apartment, one weekcan realistically be enough time to get everything together.

That being said, if you’re working the week before your move, doing so and trying to pack up an apartment could be a bit stressful. So, if you can, we recommend giving yourself extra time just in case.

On the other hand, if you live in a multi-story home and have a large family, starting earlier rather than later is only going to benefit you in the long run. We suggest starting at least a month or two in advance of your moving day.

Get all your boxes and other materials beforehand and pack a little bit of your home each day. Start with non-essential areas like your basement, home office, and garage, and slowly make your way to the other areas in your home that hold your more important items. This will ensure that you can continue using the items you need daily without having to search through a series of taped-up moving boxes for something you’re looking for.

If you do end up missing an essential item during your move, we recommend labelling each individual box that you pack, this can give you a better idea about where the item may be, without tearing through each box and creating more of a mess in the process.

How to move into a new house quickly?

To make your move-in day go as a quickly and efficiently as possible, here’s what you need to do:

Plan your move in advance of your move in date

When it comes to moving into your dream home, the key is to begin planning well in advance of your set move-in date. We recommend putting together a to-do list about two months ahead of time to give yourself enough of a timeframe where you can get all your tasks done, without stressing.

Purchase packing materials

On your task list, you’ll want to buy packing supplies first. You can find all the supplies you need to successfully move into your new space at a local hardware store, or  a moving supply company.

Consider buying a variety of different-sized boxes, tape, packing peanuts, bubble wrap for your breakables, and markersto clearly label each box for your hired movers.

Reserve a moving truck or hire professional movers

Now that you’ve collected all your moving supplies, you’ll want to contact local moving companies. moving companies to see if they can accommodate your moving day. When moving into a new home, you’ll want to reach out to a moving company at least 4 to 8 weeks in advance.

This will give them enough to to plan on their end, and ensure they have an appropriate moving truck and staff ready for the day of your move. Keep in mind that your moving company may also ask you to give them an inventory list of your items so they can calculate your moving quote.

Declutter your home

Before you start packing up your belongings, consider going through your clothes and other items to see if there’s anything you’re willing to part ways with. Consider dropping off donations to local community centres, or using an online marketplace to make some extra cash on the side. You could also hold a yard sale in your neighbourhood, as well!

Notify important parties about your move

To ensure that your important mail arrives at your brand new home, inform your employer, bank, subscription services, essential utility companies, and any other businesses that you will be moving to a new home. You will also need to change your driver’s license and notify the new school of your children’s enrollment.

This will save you the trouble of having to do it later, and the potential risk of losing important letters after you’ve settled into your new home. When you transfer utilities ahead of time to your new address, you won’t have to worry about getting internet, TV, water, and other essentials the day of.

Pack your belongings

When packing your belongings, start with your decor, out-of-season clothing, and any non-essential items you may have. Remember to wrap breakables carefully and use packing peanuts to prevent any breakage during the actual move. As you get closer to your moving date, you can slowly begin to pack your clothes, kitchen supplies, and other items you use daily.

And, if you need help with your packing, consider asking your moving company for assistance! Most companies offer packing and unpacking services at an additional cost.

Deconstruct your furniture

Days before, up until the night before, you’ll want to deconstruct any furniture you have to prevent it from getting damaged from one location to the next. For furniture items that aren’t easily deconstructable, consider wrapping them in bubble wrap, or roll out foam for added protection.

Do a walk-through with the previous owners

Before moving into your brand new home, do a walk-through of the property with the previous owner. Make sure that all the appliances, HVAC system, security system, circuit breaker, light fixtures, and light bulbs are working properly. You’ll also want to confirm that all agreed-upon repairs have been conducted as well. A final cleaning of your new abode should also be completed in advance of your moving day.

Get a good night’s sleep

The night before your move, try and get a good sleep. We understand that you’ll probably have a lot on your mind. But, a good sleep will help you stay focused on the morning of your moving day. Of course, don’t forget a good cup of hot coffee to help you with your early rise!

Let your movers do their thing

On your moving day, allow your movers to move all your heavy boxes and furniture. Hired personnel are highly trained in moving boxes efficiently and safely. During this time, make sure to keep children and any pets away from their work path to prevent delays and injuries.

Make an unpacking plan

Now that your moving day has come to an end, consider making an unpacking plan. It’s easy to get excited about a new home and new surroundings and jump right in. But, this can make your new home disorganized. A better idea is to start with one room at a time and work around your home. Start with essential areas like your kitchen and bathroom. Make sure you have garbage bags and toilet paper set out. You can then make your way to the bedrooms.

Clean your old house

Once you’ve moved out of your current house, you’ll need to do another walk-through with the new owners. Before that make sure you do a deep clean, conduct any repairs, change the furnace filter, and confirm that all of the appliances and utilities are in good working order.

Go explore your new neighborhood

Now that you’ve finally settled into your new home, you can now go and meet your new neighbors and become a member of your new community!

Realistically, how long will it take to adjust to my new house?

If we’re being honest, everyone is different! To make your house feel like your home, spend time decorating and making your space feel warm and comfortable. Spend time out in your neighbourhood getting to know your neighbours and what your community has to offer.

Moving to an entirely new home can be scary, but in the end it will all be worth it for the best!
