Tips for What to Do with Sentimental Clutter
We as humans tend to hold on to belongings that have sentimental value to us whether it is a toy from our childhood or photos from a trip, we took with friends decades ago. Sentimental items are belongings that we have formed attachments to as they remind us of our loved ones or happy memories. As time goes on, we accumulate more sentimental items which in-turn can cause us to have an endless amount of stuff in our homes. Here are some of our top tips to help you with organizing your sentimental clutter.
Recognize
Recognize when it is time to sort through and hopefully get rid of some of the sentimental clutter. This can be difficult for a lot of people especially since as humans we form attachments to items that signify a special memory or time in our lives. You may find yourself reaching this decision because you have to help clear out your parent’s home as their downsizing or perhaps you yourself are moving. Trust us, we understand that this step can be a difficult one, but it can be the most important one to take as this will allow you to begin the process of sorting through your sentimental belongings.
The Decluttering Process
Go through all of your sentimental items and decide if each of your items is something you want to keep in your home, throw away, sell, donate, or store away in storage. You can either do this all at once or over time, so it does not seem too overwhelming to you at first. It is up to you whether you feel comfortable sorting through it all in one go or not.
Check with Friends and Family
Donate or give items away to other family members that may want to keep them. For instance, if you are sorting through sentimental items that may have significant value to other members of your family see if they would like to keep them. Perhaps, your brother wants to keep your grandfather’s art collection, which you have been keeping in your house.
Digitize Items
We are fortunate enough to live in a day in age where many of our memories are being held in our hands – in our smartphones/in the cloud. However, generations before likely have held onto photographs of back in the day when smartphones did not exist. Try your best to digitize as many of your sentimental items as possible. This will help you minimize the number of sentimental items you are keeping around.
Self-storage
Sentimental items that you cannot seem to let go of just yet or at all can go into storage for the time being. However, if you do not have enough space for it in your home, consider renting out a storage unit. Storage units are perfect for those of you with plenty of sentimental items that you wish to keep throughout your lifetime and perhaps for your children and grandchildren.
