XYZ Storage’s Ultimate Guide: Decluttering Your Home

guide to decluttering

Being a parent can be overwhelming at times when you know you have to pick up the kids from school at 3, have dinner on the table by 5, and be able to make it to soccer practice on time. The worst part is you still have to do all that laundry that has been piling up for weeks! However, all you really can think about is catching up on all those hours of sleep you lost throughout the week. With your busy life, the last thing you want to think about is decluttering your home.

We at XYZ Storage believe in making your decluttering experience as easy as possible, so here are a few tips to guide you through decluttering your home:

Have a game plan

A game plan allows you to make time in your schedule to accomplish the decluttering process. This includes organizing your desk, clearing out your closets, or throwing away the junk in your garage. Find time slots in your week that work best for you based on your busy schedule. For example, if you’re too busy on Saturdays because of doctor appointments, driving your kids to the movies, and dinner with your in-laws. Perhaps Sunday morning you might have a few hours to organize your desk and throw away any papers that are taking up space. When you have a game plan it helps get the decluttering process started and get stuff accomplished.

Organize your surroundings

Take some time out of your day to organize the space around you whether it is the bathroom, the coffee table in the living room, or your clothes. Head over to the store and purchase containers to help keep the spaces around you organized. A perfect example would be purchasing a shoe hanger to hang your shoes in your closet or buying bins to store seasonal clothes. When you organize your surroundings, it can make you feel better and give you peace of mind.

Sell, donate, or throw away

As you go through all of your belongings think about what you can sell, donate, or throw away to make your home look and feel less cluttered. For example, when going through your closet think about the clothes that are still in good condition that you could sell or even donate to goodwill. The clothes that are in no condition to sell or donate, you could throw away.

Think about storage

If you can’t sell, donate, or throw away the item(s) think about option number four – storage. Are you the kind of person to keep things for the nostalgia but have no space to store it? Were you cleaning out your garage and realized you have no room to keep all of your winter equipment? Think about taking your belongings to storage where they can be kept and not taking up any necessary space in your home.
